ABSTRACT – This article analyses how the movie O Quinto Império – Ontem como Hoje, by Manoel de Oliveira, translates the drama ElRei Sebastião, by José Régio, published in 1949, developing a contemporaneous and pessimistic reading regarding the utopist prophecy from an earthy Christian kingdom under Portugal’s sponsorship.
