ABSTRACT – On March 25th 2008, Clube Atlético Mineiro turned 100 years of existence. This date was celebrated with enthusiasm by the press and the club’s fans, showing the importance of soccer as a cultural phenomenon, able to foment feelings of identification and community. This work aims to discuss the relationship between sports and the Brazilian society modernization process, Ion the specific context of Belo Horizonte.
